Day 15 (Boston Athletic Association) - RunnerSpace.com/Travels Season 1

Today marks the fifth day of our Boston adventures. Again, I woke up during the night to stop Jon from filling the room with pig snorts. When Jon and I rose to seize the day, he looked slightly on the sick side. Well, actually, way on the sick side, but he pulled it together because at 10:30 we had an important meeting with the Boston Athletic Association (BAA).

I have to give credit where it is due, I initially mentioned the thought of meeting with the BAA, but Jon made it happen. We prepared questions for an interview with the marketing director. Soon after arriving we met Jack Fleming, Michael Pieroni and T.K.. We discussed how the idea of our 5 month road trip took shape and our future plans. All three seemed very interested in our journey.

We switched our focus to the BAA and their strategies for current and future events. I have been really interested in how the Boston Marathon became one of the premier races in the country. One could say it is because this marathon is the oldest in the country, has the most media coverage, or attracts the most elite runners in the world. I believe it is because of Bostonians. I hear stories about the streets along the marathon being filled with wild and crazy supporters. Around half a million people line the streets from Hopkinton, the start of the race, all the way to Boylston Ave, where the race finishes. The race happens on Patriot day, a national holiday marked in Boston by the marathon. If you think football tailgate parties are the best place to let your hair down and throw your ambitions to the wind, think again. Downtown Boston swells the weekend prior to the event. The day of is your like your best birthday… everybody is there to support you. This marathon doesn’t need rock ‘n roll bands every mile to encourage you through the pain. You will have thousands of rowdy strangers screaming the visible letters of your last name. Example: My last name is Brawner. People on the right side of the street would be yelling “BRA!” like they are straight out of a fraternity. If this environment is a bit too “fun” for you, the BAA has added other races throughout the year to fulfill your needs.

Jon and I left the BAA with an excellent interview with Michael and a bag of gear. Look for the interview to be on the site in the coming days. Huge thanks to Jack, Michael, and T.K.!! Jon wanted to get rid of his sickness, so he slept through the afternoon while I rep’d my new Boston Marathon jacket on a run around campus. We joined our current roommates, Hannah and Sara, for dinner buffet at Annenberg Hall aka Hogwarts. Life at Harvard has been so good to us. Tomorrow Jon and I received an invitation to run with a BAA training group at MIT. Good times will be had. Until then, keep snow off sidewalks… Run More.

Shout Out: To the guy in the T-line at Park station, killer violin skills.
