Pennsylvania Five-O and Loopholes
This morning I knew we were nearing to the east coast when we ate bagels, cream cheese, and lox (for those on the west coast, Smoked Salmon). After breakfast, Jon and I went for a run around a snow-covered neighborhood in Avon, OH. We hit the road late morning for NYC. This leg of the trip was the shortest, so we were looking forward to checking out the scenery rather than looking out for state patrol as we sped. We were cruising through the more mountainous area of Penn when we passed one of Pennsylvania’s finest. I checked my cruising speed and it was set at 4 over. I thought we were in the clear. Wrong. The state patroller began to follow us from a distance. Soon he was tailgating us by only ten feet. I was looking at Jon trying to think of what we should do. I wasn’t speeding, so I just kept my position. After nearly two minutes of the patroller on our bumper he flipped on his lights. I pulled over to the shoulder in complete surprise. Officer Gibson walked up to the window and asked who was the owner of the vehicle. Jon pointed at himself. Officer Gibson then said, “you know your tabs have been expired since November 13th.” Jon looked surprised. He let us go with out a ticket and said we could take care of it online. Jon checked Oregon DMV on his phone. He could only renew the tabs if they hadn’t expired yet. His had. But further down on the requirements for online renewal, we found a loophole. It is possible to renew tabs online within 75 days of expiration. November 13… to January 27… don’t worry about the math, I already did it. 75 days on the dot. Jon called into the DMV, received a renewal code, and renewed the tabs. To Officer Gibson, Good timing sir.
